Major: Education with Information Studies

Hometown: Takoradi, Western Region of Ghana

Assistantship/Employment: Graduate School

Bio: Hello everyone! Michael (He/Him/His) here, and I’m from Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana. I graduated from the University of Ghana in 2022. While at the University of Ghana, I became actively involved in student affairs, which I didn’t know much about until my final year. Through this path and being a key member of my University’s Student Representative Council, I used my influence to advocate for a stop in hazing rituals in my hall, which led to some meaningful change. My experiences also revealed my university's challenges due to unstructured reporting mechanisms when addressing sensitive issues like harassment and discrimination. Motivated by these, I chose to pursue a master’s in HESA at UConn because the institution has a structured reporting system, “Maxient,” dedicated to handling misconduct issues. I plan to learn more about this system through a practicum and take the knowledge back home to address sensitive issues students face to improve their welfare. Also, UConn, because I love basketball, my GA site and the amazing faculty. In my free time, I like to stay connected with my family, listen to some good music, especially Kanye and Logic, and watch The Why Files. Go Huskies!

Emily Bretthauer

Emily Bretthauer

Undergrad: University of Connecticut

Major: Psychological Sciences

Minors: Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies

Hometown: Orange, CT

Assistantship/Employment: UConn Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS)

Bio: Hello. My name is Em (she/her), and I graduated from UConn in 2023 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in WGSS.

My journey in HESA began as an undergrad, working at the Student Union, Center for Career Development, and as an orientation leader. I always had a passion for education, but it wasn't until I met the higher education professionals at UConn that I understood where my career could go. They inspired me to look deeper at the problems in higher education, and I saw the differences some of them made in students' lives. I took some time off from formal education this past year and worked as a sexual assault advocate and crisis counselor. I know firsthand what it is like to be a marginalized student, and I've sat beside friends who've had to overcome obstacles while getting their degrees. I feel empowered by the many other women, queer folks, people of color (POC), and disabled students that continue to fight for their right to education.

Currently, I am a teaching assistant for WGSS, where I hope to inspire passion in new students to maximize their education journey. Go, huskies, WOOF!

Major: Liberal Arts and Sciences (TRCC), English (Eastern)

Hometown: Norwich, CT

Assistantship/Employment: International Programs - UConn School of Law

Bio: My name is Lilia Burdo (she/her), and I recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from Eastern Connecticut State University with my BA in English and a minor in Leadership Communication. Before my time at Eastern, I graduated from Three Rivers Community College (TRCC) as a valedictorian with a BA in Liberal Arts and Sciences.

I became interested in a career in higher education and student affairs while working in the Admissions Department at TRCC in 2020. Since that position, I expanded my knowledge of higher education through student employment in other areas of the field during my undergraduate years. At Eastern, I’ve experienced working in the School of Education and Professional Studies Dean’s Office, Orientation, the Writing Center, and The Office of Global Learning. Since graduating from Eastern in December of 2023, I have worked closely with Eastern’s Pre-College Summer program as a global learning and academic programming university assistant and began my position as the International Programs graduate assistant at UConn’s School of Law.

Beyond my experience in higher education, I have self-published a poetry chapbook focused on my transracial Chinese adoptee identity. In recognizing the unique experiences of interracial adoptees, I strive to participate in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice efforts through a career within the higher education field. Assistantship/Employment: Office of Orientation Services

Bio: Hello! My name is Carolyn Carmody (she/her), and I am originally from New Jersey. I recently graduated from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), where I majored in History with minors in U.S. Studies and Leadership.

During my time at TCNJ, I found my most formative experiences to be with the Office of Leadership and the Office of Student Transitions. After serving as an orientation leader for three years, I discovered a passion for being a “professional welcomer.” I know first-hand how difficult the transition from high school to college can be, so I’ve made it a goal of mine to ease that time for others. By helping others get their foot in the door, I can open up a world of possibilities for their self-exploration and personal development. To me, working in higher education is all about helping others find out who they can be and helping them become that.

At UConn, I’m excited to join the Office of Orientation Services as a graduate assistant and welcome a new group of Huskies to the pack. In my free time, I’m a big fan of anything related to arts and crafts. Ask me about my scrapbook!

Tristan Howard Moreau

Tristan Howard Moreau

Undergrad: University of Connecticut

Major: Psychological Sciences

Minors: Africana Studies

Hometown: Medford, NY

Assistantship/Employment: Asian American Cultural Center (AsACC)

Bio: Hey everybody, my name is Tristan Moreau (he/him/his). I spent my childhood between Queens, South Florida, and Long Island, New York. I’m a UConn class of 2024 graduate, obtaining a BA in Psychological Sciences with a minor in Africana Studies. The trajectory of my career path shifted away from clinical psychology and into higher education following a tumultuous three years on campus at UConn; experiences with struggling students needing guidance academically and socially and those looking to maximize their potential, a more impactful career emerged. Following my investment/involvement across UConn’s First Year Programs, undergraduate research with Daigle Labs in Jordan and Palestine, the Academic Achievement Center, the L.E.A.D Program’s pilot through Admissions, ResLife, and other leadership-based university positions, I honed a multitude of skills to commit to the student experience, catering to different needs and approaches to bring the best out of varying experiences here at UConn. I discovered how instrumental bridging gaps for myself was and continued the work by investing time and effort into the most deserving minds: current undergrads. Any and all work circling around diversity, equity, and inclusion also called me to action.

Currently, I have the honor of working alongside the Asian American Cultural Center over the next two years - tasked with overseeing student organizations and events through the Pan Asian Council while developing a brand new peer mentor program with a foundation on presentations and workshops. I am thrilled to be delving into such student-oriented and equity-based work, aligning with my interests and the necessary impact on college campuses for BIPOC students.

In my spare time, I enjoy quality time with friends and family, concerts, exercising, hiking, and getting lost in television shows whenever possible. I look forward to meeting you all, and I’m grateful to join HESA’s constructive community.

It was through the job I held my senior year where I got to help create a program for incoming first year students that I discovered my interest in connecting with students and working within student affairs.

This past year, I spent working back at my undergrad in their Student Activities office, where I got to lead their leadership program for first year students. I learned a lot about Student Affairs and decided that this was a career that I wanted to pursue. My goal is to create more spaces where first generation and BIPOC students can feel empowered and safe within higher education.

During my free time I love to read, romance and fantasy are two of my favorite genres, bake and cook! I also really enjoy writing when I’m not doing class work or work for my GAship!

Alanna Torres-Laboy

Alanna Torres-Laboy

Undergrad: University of Connecticut

Major: Psychological Sciences with Minors in Crime and Justice & Human Development and Family Sciences

Hometown: San Juan, PR

Assistantship/Employment: Dean of Students Office

Bio: My name is Alanna Torres-Laboy (She/her/Ella), and I am a proud Afro-Latina from San Juan, Puerto Rico. I was raised in Hartford, CT for most of my life.

I recently graduated from the University of Connecticut in May 2023. During my time as an undergrad, I was involved in various roles. I worked as a Senior Resident Assistant (SRA) for the La Comunidad Intelectual Learning Community for three years. I became a sister of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc., and served as the Chapter Recruitment and Retention Advisor. I worked as a Peer Advisor in the Psychological Sciences Undergraduate Advising Office. Lastly, I was lucky enough to work at the UConn Child Development Laboratories in the Infant Blue/Green Room which was truly rewarding. Working as an SRA in the only Latinx cultural learning community on campus brought me great joy and purpose. As someone who deals with multiple intersecting forms of marginalization, I understand the importance of enhancing the student experience specifically, for those with marginalized backgrounds. I have spent hours counseling students who face issues with their identity, socioeconomic background, lack of academic support, and difficulty navigating within the collegiate environment.

One of my many gifts is “The ability to make people feel like home”. This is why I put more effort into creating a safe environment where students are supported culturally, socially, psychologically, and academically. Within higher education, I intend to create a holistic approach to supporting students that accounts for their various identities and experiences. Outside of HESA, I love to dance, spend quality time with family, visit my amazing sorority sisters, read, play with my dog, and cook/eat. Ask me about my goddaughter and nephew, I can talk for hours.
